Original Band, Jazz Prescription

The New Horizons Band of Rockledge
founder: Dorothy Holley

The New Horizons Band of Rockledge is an offspring of a five member band called “Jazz Prescriptions” that began in 2014 rehearsing in Dorothy’s home. It originally consisted of the five members: Dr. Russell Minton on clarinet, Richard Croom on saxophone, Paul Stewart on trumpet, Dorothy on flute and Shyrl Johnson vocalist. The group played monthly at the Alzheimer’s Daycare Center and frequently at other locations in Melbourne, FL.
Local musicians began to join and a larger space to rehearse was needed so through David Ewing, our Conductor a location was found in Rockledge. Dorothy was given a grant to establish the New Horizons Band of Rockledge in 2016. The band is a member of the New Horizons International Association that has been in existence since 1991.

As a member of Space Coast Jazz Society she established jazz workshops for the youth in the community and was able to entice local musician to assist. This led to a successful intergenerational event entitled “An Afternoon of Jazz” that was held at the Harris Auditorium of the Foosaner Art Museum in Melbourne and was well received by the audience.

This year she began conducting music workshops for young children and adults in the nearby vicinity. The New Horizons Band of Rockledge continues to make music and we would love to play for you.

She is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority.

Fading Colors

The New Horizons Band of Rockledge is very fortunate to have members of the community volunteer their time and talent not only as musicians, but also as part of our administrative team as well.
